Trio complete St Albans Sleepout in aid of Herts Young Homeless
Echelon Group CEO Mathew Baxter, Office Manager Jenny Lloyd, and Director of Projects and Procurement Sharon Hunt took part in the St Albans Sleepout last Friday.
The team spent the night sleeping out in the open at Oaklands College, St Albans, raising vital funds for Herts Young Homeless, whose main aim is to prevent homelessness, as well as offering advice and support to those in crisis.
“Taking part in the sleepout was a humbling and eye-opening experience,” said Jenny. “Whilst it was cold (although thankfully dry) we were still in a ‘safe’ environment, so it’s a stark reminder that it’s very easy to take for granted the basic things that other people do not have access to. Hats off to the HYH team and the amazing work they do.”
Mathew added: “Attending the sleepout is always a sobering event. To do this for one night a year, in a controlled (and safe) environment is horrible enough, but to know this is lot’s of people’s everyday (and night) situation is utterly heartbreaking. This year also had the additional factor of Suella Braverman stating that people choose this lifestyle. Shame on her. But mostly, massive respect To HYH for shining a massive spotlight on these issues!”
“Somebody once explained to me that when you are unable to sleep the night has silent hours, giving you far too much time to think about your situation and an overwhelming feeling of loneliness,” said Sharon. “The thought of young people out on the streets with no support feeling lonely and afraid is heartbreaking. HYH needs all the financial support they can get to carry on doing the amazing work they do.”
The trip raised £540 for HYH which will help make a difference to the lives of young people facing homelessness.
